Kigali to Open New Modern Sports Park in Kagarama
Kigali residents and visitors will soon have access to a new hub for sports and recreation, as a modern facility named SportPark Kigali prepares to open in Kagarama, Kicukiro District. The complex features a miniature football pitch, a swimming pool, a fully equipped gym, a children’s playground, and spaces for traditional games such as igisoro.
The project is funded by Eritrean investors who operate similar sports parks in various parts of the world. According to the developers, Rwanda was chosen as their African destination due to its safety, cleanliness, and conducive business environment.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, November 24, 2025, Yonas Hagos, Director of Sports Park Kigali, said the investors are Eritrean nationals based in the United States with business operations both there and in several African countries.
“When it came to setting up facilities for diverse sports and fitness activities, we chose Rwanda because it is safe and clean,” Hagos said.
He noted that the aim is to provide a family-friendly environment where people can relax, exercise, and spend quality time together. “Sports Park will offer a space where athletes can train, families can bond, and communities can enjoy activities that support healthy living. Including igisoro was important because it reflects Rwandan culture,” he added.
Nzayisenga Jean Rodrigue, one of the project supervisors, said the park was designed with accessibility in mind. “These facilities were built for all Rwandans, including persons with disabilities. We ensured that no one is excluded.”
The opening of SportPark Kigali aligns with Rwanda’s broader efforts to promote physical activity and prevent non-communicable diseases. The government continues to expand sports infrastructure, including the now well-established Car-Free Day, which encourages city-wide exercise twice a month.
SportPark Kigali is expected to reinforce these initiatives by offering additional spaces for recreation and sports engagement.
The facility will officially open to the public between December 13 and 14.
