According to the Russian investigative authorities, the explosion that killed Lt Gen Kirillov and his deputy was triggered by a remote-controlled bomb placed on a ‘Scooter’ motorcycle parked near the entrance of the building where they were staying.

Photos taken at the scene show significant damage to the building’s entrance, with broken windows and debris scattered around. Nearby, a black bag intended for carrying bodies was found.

The investigative agency confirmed that an investigation has been launched to determine the details of the crime, and a search operation has begun to locate the person responsible for planting the bomb.

The agency stated, “Investigative and search activities have begun in order to understand how the crime was carried out.”

Lt Gen Kirillov, 54, had been leading the Russian forces in charge of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons since 2017. He was among those accused by Ukraine of using such weapons during Russia’s invasion, which began in February 2022.
