Rwanda to Launch Automatic Driving License Exams in September 2024
The Rwanda National Police (RNP), through its department responsible for driving tests and licenses, has officially announced that driving exams for automatic transmission vehicles will begin on September 9, 2024. This is a major step in modernizing the process for obtaining a driving license in Rwanda, as it recognizes the growing popularity of automatic transmission vehicles and responds to the demand for a more streamlined licensing process that accommodates this new reality.
For years, Rwanda, like many other countries, had primarily focused on manual transmission vehicles when it came to issuing driving licenses. This meant that prospective drivers were required to learn and demonstrate proficiency in operating manual cars, which involved mastering techniques such as gear shifting and the use of a clutch. However, with the rising number of automatic vehicles on the roads and the global trend shifting toward easier-to-drive cars, Rwanda has decided to modernize its licensing process by introducing a specific license category for automatic vehicles. The introduction of this new driving test for automatic transmission vehicles offers a more accessible pathway to obtaining a driving license for those who either prefer or only have access to automatic cars. Automatic vehicles are generally considered easier to drive since they do not require the constant shifting of gears, and this initiative is expected to make driving more accessible to a larger section of the population, especially beginners, elderly drivers, or those who find manual vehicles challenging.
