Uganda: Muhammad Ssegiriya, a Prominent Member of the NUP Party, Passes Away
The death of Hon. Muhammad Ssegiriya has been confirmed by a statement issued to the media by the Secretary-General of the National Unity Platform (NUP), David Lewis Rubogoya.
The statement revealed that on the morning of Thursday, January 9, 2024, the late Ssegiriya's mother informed them of his passing. He had been battling a prolonged illness and had been on life support in the ICU. His death was confirmed after he had been struggling for some time with his health, with his mother by his side, who also disclosed the news of his passing.
She gave her consent for the announcement of his death to be made public.
Ssegiriya was elected to the National Assembly in the 2021 NUP elections, held on January 11, 2021. The NUP party is led by Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, a renowned musician.
Ssegiriya was well-known for advocating for the people and speaking out against the Ugandan government’s shortcomings.
Before entering Parliament, Ssegiriya and his relative, Allan Ssewanyana, who also shared the same party (NUP), were arrested and charged with involvement in a machete-wielding massacre that took place in the Masaka region, where 20 people were killed. The two were granted bail on August 21, 2021, and released.
However, they were soon rearrested and incarcerated at Kigo Prison, where they were later charged with involvement in another murder case in Lwengo District.
