Rwanda has once again positioned itself at the center of regional peace efforts as it hosts Ambassador Johan Borgstam, the European Union’s Special Envoy to the Great Lakes Region, for a four-day working visit.

Foreign Affairs Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe and Defense Minister Juvenal Marizamunda received the EU envoy on October 23, 2025, in Kigali — a meeting that underscored Rwanda’s continued engagement in finding lasting solutions to instability in the Great Lakes region, particularly in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussions focused on progress made in ongoing peace initiatives, including regional talks aimed at de-escalating tensions and strengthening security cooperation. The visit follows Rwanda’s repeated calls for the European Union to play a more constructive role in addressing the root causes of insecurity — especially the continued threat posed by the FDLR militia operating in eastern DRC.

The meeting also reflects Rwanda’s broader diplomatic approach, balancing assertiveness on national sovereignty with a commitment to dialogue and regional cooperation. As part of the renewed efforts supported by the African Union, the United States, and Qatar, Kigali continues to emphasize that sustainable peace in the Great Lakes can only be achieved through honest engagement, respect for sovereignty, and tackling armed groups that destabilize the region.
